FRB 2028 Interest Rate Set at 6.45% for Oct 2026

The Reserve Bank of India has announced the interest rate on the Floating Rate Bond 2028 for the upcoming half-year period. The FRB 2028 interest rate will be 6.45 per cent per annum, applicable from October 4, 2026 to April 3, 2027.

Key Details of the FRB 2028 Interest Rate

The Floating Rate Bond 2028 carries a coupon rate linked to market benchmarks. Specifically, the base rate equals the average Weighted Average Yield (WAY) of the last three auctions of 182-Day Treasury Bills. Additionally, the RBI adds a fixed spread of 0.64 per cent on top of this base rate.

The rate-fixing day for this cycle was October 4, 2026. Therefore, the RBI calculated the base rate using T-Bill auction data from around that date. As a result, the combined rate works out to 6.45 per cent per annum for the October 2026 to April 2027 period.

What the FRB 2028 Rate Means for Investors

Floating Rate Bonds differ from fixed-rate government securities. However, they still offer investors a reliable, government-backed return. The floating structure means the coupon adjusts every six months based on prevailing market yields.

For example, if T-Bill yields rise before the next fixing date, the FRB 2028 rate could increase in the next half-year cycle. Meanwhile, falling yields would push the rate lower. This mechanism helps investors stay broadly aligned with short-term interest rate movements in the economy.

Additionally, government bonds like FRB 2028 carry zero credit risk, making them attractive to conservative investors. As a result, many institutional investors, provident funds, and retail participants hold these instruments in their portfolios.

Why This Announcement Matters

The RBI regularly publishes these rate-fixing announcements to maintain transparency in the government securities market. Therefore, investors and fund managers can plan their cash flows and portfolio strategies well in advance. The 6.45 per cent rate also reflects current short-term borrowing costs in India’s money markets.
