India Bank Credit Data: September 15, 2026

India’s scheduled bank credit stood at over ₹22.83 lakh crore as on September 15, 2026, according to the latest Reserve Bank of India data. This figure covers all scheduled banks, including regional rural banks, small finance banks, and payments banks. The numbers reflect a steady, broad-based expansion across the banking system.

Key Highlights of the Bank Credit and Deposits Data

Total deposits held by all scheduled banks reached approximately ₹28.17 lakh crore on September 15, 2026. This compares to ₹28.42 lakh crore on August 31, 2026, indicating a slight fortnightly dip. However, on a year-on-year basis, deposits grew significantly from ₹24.04 lakh crore recorded in September 2025. Time deposits continued to dominate, standing at around ₹24.77 lakh crore.

Scheduled commercial banks alone reported bank credit of ₹22.32 lakh crore for the same period. Additionally, loans, cash credits, and overdrafts accounted for the bulk of this figure, totalling ₹21.89 lakh crore. Borrowings from the RBI remained low at just ₹1,038 crore, compared to ₹57,401 crore a year ago. This suggests reduced reliance on central bank emergency liquidity.

Investments by all scheduled banks rose to ₹7.50 lakh crore, mostly in central and state government securities. Meanwhile, balances held with the RBI declined slightly to ₹8.09 lakh crore from ₹8.31 lakh crore in August 2026. As a result, liquidity conditions appear tighter compared to the previous fortnight.

What This Means for Banking Sector Trends

Food credit outstanding from scheduled commercial banks stood at ₹1,09,721 crore on September 15, 2026. For context, this was ₹45,284 crore in September 2025, showing a massive year-on-year surge. Scheduled co-operative banks held food credit steady at ₹52,074 crore. Therefore, public food procurement financing has clearly scaled up in 2026.

The RBI’s data covers 120 scheduled commercial banks, 26 scheduled state co-operative banks, and 55 scheduled primary urban co-operative banks. These numbers provide a comprehensive snapshot of banking system health. Overall, India’s scheduled bank credit data points to continued credit growth, even as deposit mobilisation sees minor short-term fluctuations.
