RBI Amends Deposit Interest Rate Directions 2026

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued final deposit interest rate directions for banks, effective October 1, 2026. These amendments follow a public consultation process that began in early June 2026. The move aims to give banks greater flexibility in pricing bulk deposits.

Key Details of the Deposit Interest Rate Directions

The RBI had released draft amendment directions on June 5, 2026. Stakeholders and regulated entities were invited to share feedback by June 20, 2026. After reviewing the responses, the RBI incorporated relevant changes into the final directions.

The final directions cover six categories of banks. These include commercial banks, small finance banks, regional rural banks, payment banks, local area banks, and urban co-operative banks. Therefore, the new rules apply broadly across India’s banking sector.

A key goal of these amendments is to allow banks to price Rupee bulk deposits more flexibly. Additionally, the directions aim to bring uniformity in how banks disclose deposit interest rates to customers. This dual focus balances operational freedom with transparency.

What This Means for Bank Customers

For depositors, these changes could mean more competitive interest rates on bulk deposits. Banks will now have greater room to structure their deposit offerings. However, the RBI has ensured that disclosure standards remain consistent across all institutions.

As a result, customers can expect clearer and more comparable interest rate information. This makes it easier to evaluate deposit products across different banks. Meanwhile, banks gain the pricing flexibility needed to manage their liabilities efficiently.

The new deposit interest rate directions come into effect from October 1, 2026. Banks should therefore review and update their deposit pricing policies well before that date. The RBI has also published a detailed annex summarising the stakeholder feedback it received.

Why It Matters for India’s Banking Sector

This regulatory update reflects the RBI’s ongoing effort to modernise banking guidelines. By consulting stakeholders before finalising rules, the central bank follows a transparent policymaking approach. For example, the feedback received led to meaningful modifications in the final text.

Additionally, extending the deposit interest rate amendments to payment banks and co-operative banks signals an inclusive regulatory approach. It ensures smaller and specialised banks operate under updated, relevant guidelines. Overall, this move strengthens the deposit market framework across India.
