RBI Extends Directions for Industrial Co-operative Bank

The Reserve Bank of India has extended its directions for the Industrial Co-operative Bank Ltd., Guwahati by three more months. The extension runs from July 4, 2026, to October 4, 2026, subject to review. The RBI issued this decision in the public interest.

Key Details of the RBI Direction Extension

The RBI first issued directions to the Industrial Co-operative Bank under Section 35A of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, on July 3, 2025. Those directions initially covered six months, up to January 4, 2026. The RBI then extended the period once before, pushing the deadline to July 4, 2026.

Now, the central bank has extended the directions for a further three months. Therefore, the bank remains under these regulatory constraints until October 4, 2026. The RBI holds this authority under sub-section (1) of Section 35A, read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, as applicable to co-operative societies.

What This Means for Customers and the Bank

Customers of the Industrial Co-operative Bank should note that all existing terms and conditions remain unchanged. However, the RBI has clearly stated that this extension does not mean it is satisfied with the bank’s financial position. Additionally, the extension alone should not be read as a clean bill of financial health.

The RBI will continue to review the bank’s situation before October 4, 2026. As a result, further action — including additional extensions or modifications — remains possible. Meanwhile, all other directive terms stay firmly in place.

Background on Section 35A Directions

Section 35A directions allow the RBI to restrict a bank’s operations when it believes doing so protects depositors or serves the public interest. For example, these restrictions may limit withdrawals, lending, or other banking activities. Co-operative banks across India have faced such directions in recent years as the RBI tightens oversight of the sector.

The Guwahati-based lender has now been under RBI directions for over a year. Therefore, depositors and stakeholders should monitor further RBI announcements closely. The central bank has not indicated a timeline for lifting the restrictions entirely.
