RBI Extends Directions on Ramgarhia Co-op Bank

The Reserve Bank of India has extended its directions on Ramgarhia Co-operative Bank Limited, New Delhi, for three more months. The extended period runs from close of business on October 8, 2026, to close of business on January 8, 2027. The RBI cited public interest as the reason for this latest extension.

Key Details of the RBI Directions Extension

The RBI first issued directions to Ramgarhia Co-operative Bank under Section 35A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. Those original directions came into effect on July 8, 2022. Since then, the central bank has extended them multiple times, with the last extension issued on June 30, 2026.

Additionally, the RBI has made its position clear on one important point. This extension does not mean the central bank is satisfied with the bank’s financial position. Therefore, customers and stakeholders should not treat this renewal as a clean chit for the bank’s financial health. All other terms and conditions of the original directive remain unchanged.

What This Means for Customers

For depositors of Ramgarhia Co-operative Bank, the extension of RBI directions means restrictions on the bank’s operations continue. However, the RBI’s ongoing oversight also means the regulator is actively monitoring the situation. As a result, customers should stay informed about any further updates from the central bank.

The RBI will review the position before January 8, 2027. Meanwhile, the bank must continue to operate under the existing regulatory framework. For example, withdrawal limits and other restrictions set under the original directive still apply. Customers are advised to check with the bank directly for details on their specific accounts.

About Section 35A Directions

Section 35A of the Banking Regulation Act gives the RBI the power to issue directions to any banking company in the public interest. These directions help the regulator protect depositors and maintain financial stability. Co-operative banks, like Ramgarhia Co-operative Bank, also fall under this framework through Section 56 of the same Act. The RBI uses these powers when it finds a bank’s operations pose a risk to its depositors or the broader financial system.
