RBI Extends Irinjalakuda Co-op Bank Directions

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has extended its directions on Irinjalakuda Town Co-operative Bank Ltd., Kerala for a further three months. The extended period runs from July 30, 2026, to October 30, 2026. This move keeps the earlier regulatory restrictions firmly in place.

Key Details of the RBI Directions Extension

The RBI first issued directions to the Irinjalakuda Town Co-operative Bank under Section 35A of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, on July 29, 2025. Those initial directions covered six months. The bank’s restrictions were subsequently extended to July 30, 2026, before this latest three-month extension was announced.

The central bank cited public interest as the primary reason for the further extension. Therefore, all earlier terms and conditions of the directive remain unchanged. Additionally, the RBI has reserved the right to review the situation before October 30, 2026.

What This Means for Customers and the Bank

Customers of Irinjalakuda Town Co-operative Bank should note that the existing restrictions continue without change. However, the RBI has clearly stated that this extension does not signal satisfaction with the bank’s financial health. As a result, depositors must stay alert for any further updates from the regulator.

Meanwhile, the bank operates under close RBI scrutiny. The central bank retains the authority to modify or lift the directive based on its ongoing review. For example, improvements in the bank’s financial position could influence the RBI’s next decision.

The directive was extended via Directive No. DOR.MON.No.D-08/12.26.061/2026-27, issued on April 21, 2026. The latest three-month extension reflects the RBI’s cautious, step-by-step approach to managing distressed cooperative banks. Additionally, this case underscores the regulator’s commitment to protecting depositor interests across India’s cooperative banking sector.

Customers can follow official RBI communications for real-time updates on the Irinjalakuda Town Co-operative Bank directions.
