RBI Fines Baria Sahakari Bank ₹1 Lakh

The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹1 lakh on Shri Baria Nagarik Sahakari Bank Ltd., located in Baria, Gujarat. The RBI penalty was issued on July 17, 2026, for non-compliance with its directions on inspection and audit systems in urban co-operative banks. This action underscores the central bank’s firm stance on regulatory compliance.

Why the RBI Penalty Was Imposed

The RBI conducted a statutory inspection of the bank based on its financial position as of March 31, 2025. During this inspection, supervisors found a significant compliance failure. Specifically, the bank had failed to conduct its Internal Audit for a two-year period — from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2025.

Following the inspection, the RBI issued a show-cause notice to the bank. The bank submitted its reply and also presented oral submissions during a personal hearing. However, after reviewing all submissions, the RBI found the charge against the bank to be sustained. As a result, it proceeded with the monetary penalty.

Key Details of the Action

The RBI imposed this penalty under Section 47A(1)(c), read with Sections 46(4)(i) and 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. Therefore, the central bank acted well within its legal authority. The penalty amount stands at ₹1 lakh.

Additionally, the RBI clarified an important point for customers. This action targets regulatory deficiencies only. It does not question the validity of any transaction or agreement the bank has entered into with its customers. Meanwhile, the RBI has reserved the right to initiate further action against the bank if required.

What This Means for Co-operative Bank Customers

For customers, this RBI penalty serves as a reminder to stay informed about their bank’s compliance record. Co-operative banks must follow RBI audit guidelines strictly. Failure to conduct internal audits is a serious lapse, as these audits protect depositors and ensure financial health.

The RBI continues to monitor urban co-operative banks closely. Actions like these signal that the regulator will not overlook audit and inspection failures, however minor the institution may be. Customers of Shri Baria Nagarik Sahakari Bank can continue their normal banking operations without disruption.
