The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹3.10 lakh on Ola Financial Services Private Limited for failing to comply with RBI’s KYC directions. The central bank issued this order on September 24, 2026, citing clear deficiencies in regulatory compliance.
Key Details of the RBI Penalty on Ola Financial Services
RBI conducted a statutory inspection of Ola Financial Services covering its operations from January 2025 to November 2025. Based on supervisory findings, the regulator issued a show-cause notice to the company. The company then submitted a reply, additional written submissions, and also presented its case during a personal hearing.
However, RBI found one charge sustained against the company. Specifically, the company failed to carry out risk categorisation of certain customers. This is a core requirement under RBI’s Know Your Customer framework for payment system operators.
RBI imposed the penalty under Section 30(1) read with Section 26(6) of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007. Therefore, the regulator had clear statutory authority to take this action.
What This Means for Customers and the Company
Importantly, this penalty does not question the validity of any transaction or agreement Ola Financial Services has made with its customers. RBI has clarified that the action targets regulatory compliance gaps only. Additionally, the penalty does not prevent RBI from initiating further action against the company if required.
For customers, this serves as a reminder that payment service providers must meet strict KYC norms. Risk categorisation of customers helps financial institutions detect suspicious activity early. As a result, it plays a vital role in protecting users from financial fraud.
Meanwhile, this penalty underlines RBI’s continued focus on enforcing KYC compliance across India’s growing digital payments sector. The regulator has been tightening oversight of fintech and payment companies in recent years. For example, several similar penalties have been handed out to both banks and non-bank payment operators.
Ola Financial Services, the financial arm of the Ola group, operates as a payment system provider under RBI’s regulatory framework. The company will need to address the identified compliance gaps going forward.
