RBI G-Sec Conversion Auction Results 2025

The Reserve Bank of India recently released the results of its latest government securities conversion auction. This RBI G-Sec conversion auction involved six source securities, with bids accepted across five of the six tranches. The exercise helps the government manage its debt maturity profile more efficiently.

Key Details of the RBI G-Sec Conversion Auction

The RBI notified amounts ranging from ₹2,000 crore to ₹4,000 crore per security. For the 8.26% GS 2027, the RBI accepted ₹2,000 crore and issued ₹2,191.94 crore of the 7.19% GS 2060 as the destination security. Additionally, the 7.17% GS 2028 tranche saw the highest activity, with 34 offers received and 18 accepted, totalling ₹3,000 crore. Meanwhile, the 6.03% GS 2029 tranche received no offers and therefore recorded zero acceptance.

The 7.06% GS 2028 source security attracted 12 offers. However, only 11 were accepted, amounting to ₹1,925 crore. As a result, the destination security — 7.23% GS 2039 — was issued worth ₹1,968.89 crore. The 7.26% GS 2029 tranche performed well too, with 17 of 18 offers accepted at ₹2,377.18 crore. Furthermore, the 6.79% GS 2029 tranche saw ₹2,000 crore accepted from 7 of 14 offers received.

What This Means for Bond Market Participants

Cut-off yields for the destination securities ranged between 7.36% and 7.84%. For example, the 7.19% GS 2060 carried the highest cut-off yield at 7.8391%, reflecting the longer tenure premium. Therefore, investors in long-dated bonds face higher yield expectations from the market. This outcome signals continued demand for medium- and long-term government paper.

Conversion auctions allow the government to replace shorter-maturity bonds with longer-term ones. As a result, they reduce the refinancing pressure on the government in the near term. Additionally, these auctions improve liquidity in specific benchmark securities. Market participants should watch upcoming auction calendars closely for further such operations.

Overall, the auction results reflect healthy market participation in most tranches. However, the absence of bids for the 6.03% GS 2029 tranche highlights selective investor appetite. The RBI will likely continue such switch operations to smoothen the government’s debt repayment schedule going forward.
