RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra inaugurated the new campus of the Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning (CAFRAL) in Mumbai. The event marks a major milestone for this RBI-promoted institution. CAFRAL now operates from its own dedicated premises for the first time.

During his inaugural address, Governor Malhotra congratulated CAFRAL on the move to its new building. He stressed the importance of continuous learning and capacity building in India’s financial sector. Additionally, he highlighted the need for in-depth research to meet modern banking challenges.
CAFRAL aims to become a global centre of excellence in banking, finance, and macroeconomics. It supports policy making and develops leadership capability across India’s financial system. Therefore, its role goes well beyond a typical training institution.
The institution runs two core verticals. On one side, it produces rigorous, policy-oriented research. On the other, its learning vertical offers capacity-building programmes for senior financial sector professionals.
What the New Campus Means for India’s Financial Sector
A Governing Council chaired by the RBI Governor continues to guide CAFRAL’s direction. This structure ensures the institution stays closely aligned with national banking priorities. As a result, its research and training directly influence key policy decisions.
The inauguration function was well-attended by top RBI leadership. Deputy Governors Swaminathan J, Dr. Poonam Gupta, and Rohit Jain were present at the event. Executive Director P. Vasudevan, who also serves as Director of CAFRAL, attended alongside senior RBI officers and CAFRAL officials.
Directors of NIBM and the College of Supervisors, RBI, also joined the ceremony. Meanwhile, several Executive Directors and senior officers of the Reserve Bank were part of the gathering. The strong turnout reflects the significance of this inauguration for India’s banking ecosystem.
For India’s growing financial sector, a dedicated CAFRAL campus signals long-term investment in knowledge and leadership. However, the true impact will depend on how effectively the institution expands its research output and training reach in the years ahead.
