The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) convened its third annual Internal Ombudsmen conference on July 13, 2026, in Mumbai. The event brought together Internal Ombudsmen (IOs) from banks, NBFCs, credit information companies, and other regulated entities. Senior executives, RBI Ombudsmen, and top RBI officials also attended.
Key Highlights of the Internal Ombudsmen Conference
Deputy Governor Shri Swaminathan J. delivered the keynote address. He urged IOs to provide fair, meaningful, and effective resolution of customer complaints. Additionally, he asked IOs to identify recurring issues, conduct root cause analysis, and implement corrective measures. He stressed that a strong IO mechanism should reduce external escalations significantly.
The Deputy Governor also called on Boards and senior management to empower the IO framework. Therefore, internal grievance systems must use IO insights to strengthen customer service. As a result, fewer complaints would need to reach the RBI Ombudsman or other external forums.
What This Means for Bank Customers
The conference sessions covered recent grievance redress developments and regulatory expectations. Meanwhile, RBI Ombudsmen shared practical insights focused on faster and higher-quality complaint resolutions. The sessions also explored systemic improvements to prevent avoidable escalations in the future.
Executive Director Smt. Sonali Sen Gupta led an open-house session with participants. She exchanged views on enhancing the effectiveness of the IO framework further. This interactive session allowed regulated entities to share real-world challenges and feedback directly with RBI leadership.
For customers, the Internal Ombudsman serves as the final independent review level within a bank or NBFC. However, if a complaint remains unresolved internally, customers can then approach the RBI Ombudsman. Therefore, a stronger IO mechanism directly benefits millions of banking customers across India.
RBI’s continued focus on internal grievance redress signals its commitment to improving customer protection standards. Additionally, regular conferences like this help align regulated entities with evolving regulatory expectations. As a result, the overall quality of complaint handling across India’s financial sector is expected to improve steadily.
