The Reserve Bank of India has launched a new RBI data centre and cyber security training institution in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the facility, gracing the event with his personal presence. This landmark launch signals India’s growing commitment to building a secure and technology-driven financial system.
Key Details of the RBI Data Centre and Cyber Security Institute
The RBI already operates critical financial market infrastructure across India. It runs RTGS for real-time settlement of large-value transactions and NEFT for round-the-clock retail payments. Additionally, its core banking solution, E-Kuber, powers government banking and interbank transactions. The NDS-OM platform enables transparent trading in government securities, while RBI Retail Direct has opened this market to ordinary investors.
Technology has also transformed the RBI’s internal operations. The PRAVAH system allows regulated entities to apply online for licences and approvals. Meanwhile, CIMS serves as the RBI’s central data warehouse, and DAKSH functions as its advanced supervisory platform. Together, these tools help the RBI detect risks faster and respond more effectively.
On the payments front, UPI — operated by NPCI — has brought digital payments to hundreds of millions of Indians. Furthermore, the Account Aggregator framework, Unified Lending Interface, RBI Innovation Hub, and the regulatory sandbox are all driving responsible fintech innovation. The RBI’s CBDC pilot project continues to explore new forms of digital currency using modern technology.
Why the New Training Institute Matters for India’s Banking System
A financial system is only as strong as its security. Therefore, the RBI has already put in place frameworks covering IT governance, cyber resilience, outsourcing risks, third-party exposure, and digital payment security. However, strong frameworks need skilled people to enforce them.
Prime Minister Modi had, during the RBI@90 celebrations in April 2024, urged the RBI to embrace AI and new technologies while building cyber-aware, skilled manpower. As a result, this new data centre and cyber security training institution directly answers that call. It will build expertise in cybersecurity, data science, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence for RBI and banking system officials.
The RBI expressed deep gratitude to the Prime Minister for his presence at the inauguration. It also thanked the Central Government and the Government of Odisha for their invaluable support in making this facility a reality.
