RBI Overnight VRR Auction Set for October 22

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will conduct an overnight Variable Rate Repo (VRR) auction on Thursday, October 22, 2026. This decision follows a review of current and evolving liquidity conditions in the near term. The auction is part of the RBI’s Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) operations.

Key Details of the VRR Auction

The RBI has notified a total amount of ₹50,000 crore for this one-day repo auction. Banks can participate during a short window between 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM. Additionally, the reversal of funds will take place the very next day, on Friday, October 23, 2026.

Therefore, this is a classic overnight operation, lasting just one day. The RBI will follow operational guidelines issued in Press Release 2021-2022/1572, dated January 20, 2022. These established guidelines ensure a smooth and transparent bidding process for participating banks.

What This Variable Rate Repo Auction Means for Banks

The RBI uses VRR auctions as a key tool to manage short-term liquidity in the banking system. When the central bank senses a temporary liquidity deficit, it injects funds through such repo operations. As a result, banks gain access to short-term funds at market-determined rates.

However, this differs from fixed-rate repo operations, where the interest rate is pre-set. In a variable rate auction, banks submit competitive bids, and the RBI accepts bids up to the notified amount. This approach, therefore, helps the central bank absorb or inject liquidity more efficiently.

Meanwhile, such overnight auctions reflect the RBI’s active management of daily money market conditions. They help prevent undue volatility in the call money market. For example, a sudden liquidity crunch can push short-term borrowing rates sharply higher, which the RBI aims to avoid.

Why It Matters for India’s Banking Sector

Regular VRR auctions signal that the RBI is closely monitoring system-level liquidity. Additionally, they demonstrate the central bank’s readiness to act swiftly when conditions change. This builds confidence among market participants and supports overall financial stability.

Banks and treasury desks will, therefore, want to note the tight 30-minute bidding window on October 22. Timely participation is essential to secure funds at favourable rates. The RBI’s proactive stance continues to support orderly conditions in India’s money markets.
