The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the latest T-Bill auction results for the 91-day and 364-day treasury bills. The 182-day T-Bill saw no acceptance this round. These results offer a clear snapshot of short-term government borrowing costs in India.
Key Details of the T-Bill Auction
The RBI notified ₹8,000 crore worth of 91-day T-Bills for this auction. The cut-off price came in at ₹98.5511, reflecting an implicit yield to maturity (YTM) of 5.8970%. Additionally, the RBI accepted the full notified amount of ₹8,000 crore for this tenure.
For the 364-day T-Bill, the RBI notified ₹7,000 crore. The cut-off price settled at ₹93.7820, with a YTM of 6.6485%. As a result, the full ₹7,000 crore was accepted here as well. The higher yield on the longer tenure reflects typical market expectations.
Meanwhile, the 182-day T-Bill told a different story. The RBI had notified ₹8,000 crore for this segment. However, it accepted NIL bids, meaning no amount was raised under this category this time.
What These T-Bill Auction Results Mean for the Market
Treasury bills are short-term government securities that signal near-term interest rate trends. Therefore, these cut-off yields matter to banks, mutual funds, and institutional investors. A YTM of around 5.90% on the 91-day bill suggests a relatively stable short-term rate environment.
The 364-day yield of 6.65% is notably higher, for example, indicating that markets price in slightly more risk or rate movement over a longer horizon. Additionally, the complete rejection of 182-day bids suggests that submitted prices did not meet the RBI’s acceptable range. This outcome is not uncommon when market expectations and RBI benchmarks diverge.
For everyday banking customers, these rates indirectly influence fixed deposit rates and lending benchmarks. As a result, tracking T-Bill auction outcomes helps gauge the broader direction of short-term interest rates in India. Investors in liquid and ultra-short-duration mutual funds should also pay close attention to these figures.
