RBI Treasury Bill Auction: ₹24,000 Crore on Sale

The Reserve Bank of India has announced a treasury bill auction worth ₹24,000 crore, scheduled for Wednesday, September 30, 2026. The auction covers three tenors — 91-day, 182-day, and 364-day Treasury Bills. Settlement will take place the following day, on October 1, 2026.

Key Details of the Treasury Bill Auction

The RBI will offer ₹9,000 crore in 91-day T-Bills, ₹8,000 crore in 182-day T-Bills, and ₹7,000 crore in 364-day T-Bills. Therefore, the total notified amount across all three instruments stands at ₹24,000 crore. The auction will use a price-based, multiple-price method.

Competitive bids must be submitted electronically via RBI’s E-Kuber system between 10:30 am and 11:30 am. Non-competitive bids, however, must be placed between 10:30 am and 11:00 am. Results will be declared on the same day.

Additionally, only in the event of a system failure will the RBI accept physical bids. Bidders facing technical issues should contact the Public Debt Office at 022-22603456 or the Core Banking Operations Team at 022-69870466.

What This Means for Retail Investors

Individual investors can also participate in this treasury bill auction on a non-competitive basis. As a result, retail investors do not need to quote a price — the RBI allocates T-Bills to them at the weighted average cut-off rate. This makes the process simpler and more accessible.

However, retail investor allocation is capped at a maximum of 5 percent of the notified amount per instrument. Individuals can conveniently place their non-competitive bids through RBI’s Retail Direct portal at rbiretaildirect.org.in. Meanwhile, State Governments, Union Territories with legislature, eligible Provident Funds, and designated Foreign Central Banks may also participate on a non-competitive basis outside the notified amount.

For example, this auction provides a low-risk, short-term investment opportunity backed by the Government of India. Successful bidders must complete payment on October 1, 2026. The auction terms follow the General Notification F.No.4(2)-B(W&M)/2018 dated March 26, 2025, as amended.
