RBI VRR Auction Results: July 21, 2026

The Reserve Bank of India conducted a 3-day Variable Rate Repo auction on July 21, 2026. The RBI VRR auction offered ₹75,000 crore to the banking system. However, banks placed bids totalling only ₹34,291 crore. The entire bid amount was allotted in full.

Key Details of the RBI VRR Auction

The cut-off rate and the weighted average rate both settled at 5.26%. This indicates that all accepted bids clustered around a single rate. As a result, there was no partial allotment at the cut-off rate. The RBI therefore marked the partial allotment percentage as not applicable.

The notified amount stood at ₹75,000 crore. Meanwhile, actual bids received reached only ₹34,291 crore. This means the auction was undersubscribed by a significant margin. Banks borrowed less than half the available liquidity on offer.

What This Means for Banking Liquidity

An undersubscribed VRR auction suggests banks currently hold adequate short-term funds. Therefore, demand for additional RBI liquidity support remains low. This can reflect comfortable conditions in the overnight and short-term money markets. Additionally, it may signal that banks are not facing immediate funding pressures.

The 3-day tenor of this repo means banks must repay the funds within a very short window. Short-tenor VRR auctions help the RBI fine-tune daily liquidity conditions. For example, the RBI uses such tools actively to keep overnight rates close to the policy repo rate. The 5.26% weighted average rate aligns closely with the current policy rate corridor.

Why This Matters for Investors and Depositors

Stable short-term rates benefit both banks and their customers. However, consistently low auction participation could prompt the RBI to reassess its liquidity management approach. As a result, future auctions may see adjusted notified amounts. Meanwhile, depositors and borrowers should watch upcoming RBI announcements for any policy signals.

The RBI VRR auction results are published regularly as part of its open market operations. These auctions play a key role in India’s monetary transmission mechanism. Additionally, they help ensure that the banking system operates smoothly without excess or deficit liquidity. Tracking these results offers useful insight into near-term interest rate trends.
