The Reserve Bank of India conducted an overnight Variable Rate Reverse Repo (VRRR) auction on November 4, 2026. The RBI VRRR auction drew strong interest from banks, with bids far exceeding the notified amount. This signals robust liquidity conditions in the banking system.
Key Details of the RBI VRRR Auction
The RBI set the notified amount at ₹50,000 crore for this one-day tenor auction. However, banks submitted total offers worth ₹73,907 crore — nearly 48% more than the available amount. As a result, the RBI accepted ₹50,015 crore, slightly above the notified limit due to partial allotment at the cut-off rate.
The cut-off rate and the weighted average rate both settled at 5.49%. Additionally, the partial acceptance percentage for offers received at the cut-off rate stood at 67.64%. This means not all bids placed at 5.49% received full allotment.
What This Means for the Banking System
The strong oversubscription in this RBI VRRR auction reflects surplus liquidity among Indian banks. Therefore, lenders are actively seeking to park excess funds with the central bank at competitive rates. This is a key tool the RBI uses to manage short-term liquidity in the financial system.
Meanwhile, the 5.49% rate offers banks a reliable overnight return on idle funds. For example, when auction demand consistently exceeds supply, it typically indicates that the system holds more cash than required for daily operations. The RBI monitors these trends closely to maintain monetary stability.
Additionally, the VRRR mechanism helps the central bank absorb excess liquidity without permanently altering money supply. This keeps short-term interest rates aligned with the broader monetary policy framework. As a result, the banking sector benefits from a more stable and predictable rate environment.
About the VRRR Mechanism
The Variable Rate Reverse Repo is a flexible liquidity absorption tool used by the RBI. Under this mechanism, banks lend money to the RBI for a fixed tenor at market-determined rates. The RBI then uses auction results to gauge liquidity demand and adjust its operations accordingly. This auction was conducted under Press Release 2026-2027/1435, issued by Deputy General Manager (Communications) Ajit Prasad.
