The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the results of its 3-day Variable Rate Reverse Repo (VRRR) auction held on September 25, 2026. The central bank accepted bids worth ₹90,280 crore against a notified amount of ₹1,50,000 crore. Therefore, the auction saw a partial subscription from banks and financial institutions.
Key Details of the VRRR Auction
The RBI notified ₹1,50,000 crore for this short-term liquidity absorption exercise. However, banks submitted total offers of only ₹90,280 crore. As a result, the RBI accepted the entire ₹90,280 crore that was offered. No partial acceptance was required at the cut-off rate.
The cut-off rate stood at 5.24%, and the weighted average rate also settled at 5.24%. This indicates uniform pricing across all accepted bids. Additionally, the partial acceptance percentage was not applicable in this case, since total offers fell below the notified amount.
What This VRRR Auction Means for Liquidity
The RBI uses VRRR auctions to absorb surplus liquidity from the banking system. For example, when banks park funds with the RBI through this route, it helps the central bank manage short-term money supply. Meanwhile, the lower-than-notified subscription suggests that surplus liquidity in the system was relatively moderate on that day.
The 3-day tenor means the absorbed funds will return to banks after a short period. This keeps the liquidity adjustment flexible. Therefore, this auction reflects the RBI’s ongoing efforts to keep market rates aligned with its policy objectives.
Why It Matters for Indian Banking
VRRR auctions are a key monetary policy tool for the RBI. They allow the central bank to fine-tune liquidity without making permanent changes to rates. Additionally, the 5.24% rate offers banks a risk-free, short-term return on idle funds. This makes the VRRR auction an important benchmark for overnight and short-term money markets in India.
Investors and treasury managers closely track these results. However, the undersubscription signals that banks may have deployed funds elsewhere. As a result, market participants will watch upcoming auctions for further liquidity trends.
