The Reserve Bank of India recently released the government bond auction results for four securities. The RBI government bond auction drew strong investor demand across all four instruments. Overall, bids received far exceeded the notified amounts, signaling healthy appetite from the market.
Key Auction Details and Cut-Off Yields
The RBI offered four securities in this auction. These included the 6.20% GS 2029, 6.57% GS 2033, 7.63% GS 2056, and the 7.50% GOI Sovereign Green Bond 2056. The notified amounts were ₹9,000 crore, ₹12,000 crore, ₹9,000 crore, and ₹3,000 crore respectively.
Competitive bids received were substantially higher than the amounts on offer. For example, the 6.57% GS 2033 alone attracted bids worth ₹29,756 crore against a notified amount of ₹12,000 crore. The cut-off yields settled at 6.7688% for the 2029 bond, 7.1680% for the 2033 bond, 7.6895% for the 2056 bond, and 7.6539% for the Green Bond.
Meanwhile, weighted average yields came in slightly lower than cut-off yields. This indicates that many competitive bids were placed at more favourable prices. Therefore, successful bidders received bonds at better-than-cutoff rates on average.
What the RBI Government Bond Auction Means for the Market
Primary dealers fully underwrote all four securities. Additionally, there was no devolvement on primary dealers in any of the bonds. This outcome reflects a smooth and successful auction process.
Non-competitive bids were also accepted in full across all securities. However, the amounts involved were relatively small compared to competitive bids. As a result, the auction outcome was largely driven by institutional and competitive participants.
The strong demand in this RBI government bond auction suggests continued confidence in Indian government securities. Investors appear comfortable with current yield levels, particularly for long-dated papers like the 2056 bonds. This trend is important for India’s fiscal borrowing programme going forward.
