RBI VRRR Auction Scheduled for September 30, 2026

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will conduct an overnight VRRR auction on September 30, 2026. This RBI VRRR auction is part of the central bank’s Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) operations. The move follows a review of current and evolving liquidity conditions in the banking system.

Key Details of the RBI VRRR Auction

The RBI has set a notified amount of ₹2,00,000 crore for this auction. It carries a tenor of just one day, making it an overnight operation. Banks can participate during a 30-minute window, from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM on September 30, 2026. The reversal of funds will take place on October 1, 2026 (Thursday).

Additionally, the operational guidelines for this auction remain unchanged. The RBI will follow the same rules outlined in Press Release 2019-2020/1947, dated February 13, 2020. Therefore, participating banks should already be familiar with the process.

What This VRRR Auction Means for Liquidity

Through a VRRR auction, the RBI absorbs surplus liquidity from the banking system. As a result, this tool helps the central bank manage short-term money market conditions effectively. A notified amount as large as ₹2 lakh crore signals that the RBI is closely watching excess liquidity.

Meanwhile, banks that park funds with the RBI earn interest at a variable rate determined during the auction. This approach gives the central bank greater flexibility compared to fixed-rate instruments. However, the actual cut-off rate will only be known after bids are submitted and accepted.

For Indian banks and financial institutions, these auctions are a routine but important tool. They directly influence overnight rates and overall monetary conditions. Therefore, treasury desks across the country will monitor this auction closely on September 30.

Why It Matters for the Banking Sector

The RBI regularly uses VRRR operations to fine-tune system liquidity. For example, when surplus cash is high, the central bank absorbs it to keep inflation pressures in check. This helps maintain orderly conditions in money markets.

Additionally, consistent use of LAF tools signals that the RBI remains proactive in its liquidity management strategy. As a result, market participants can plan their short-term borrowing and lending more confidently. Overall, this auction reinforces the RBI’s commitment to monetary stability in India.
