RBI Governor Meets Bank CEOs on Growth and AI

The Reserve Bank of India held its half-yearly RBI bank CEO meeting in Mumbai on July 14, 2026. Governor Sanjay Malhotra chaired the session with Managing Directors and CEOs of public sector and select private sector banks. Deputy Governors Shri Swaminathan J., Dr. Poonam Gupta, Shri S. C. Murmu, and Shri Rohit Jain also attended the meeting.

Additionally, Executive Directors overseeing supervision, regulation, enforcement, consumer protection, and financial inclusion were present. The meeting provided a platform for frank dialogue between the RBI leadership and top bank executives. Participants shared feedback on a wide range of issues affecting the financial sector.

Key Highlights from the RBI Bank CEO Meeting

The Governor opened by acknowledging broad-based growth across the banking sector. However, he urged banks not to become complacent. He called on them to serve all segments of the economy with renewed vigour and prudence.

He stressed that banks should leverage advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, to expand reach and improve efficiency. Furthermore, he highlighted the need to reduce costs and enhance customer experience through smarter digital tools. At the same time, he warned banks to maintain robust cybersecurity and strong internal controls against fraud and data misuse.

The Governor also emphasized cultivating a genuine passion for customer service. As a result, banks must place customers at the very heart of their operations. This focus on service excellence, he noted, is non-negotiable.

Digital Initiatives and Consumer Protection on the Agenda

The meeting also covered several important digital and regulatory initiatives. These included the Central KYC Records Registry (CKYCR), early detection of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN), and the adoption of MuleHunter to tackle mule bank accounts. Meanwhile, topics such as the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), Unified Lending Interface (ULI), Account Aggregator framework, FX Retail, and Retail-Direct were also discussed.

Therefore, this meeting signals the RBI’s continued push toward a more technology-driven and customer-centric banking ecosystem. Banks are clearly expected to accelerate digital adoption while managing associated risks responsibly. The RBI’s focus on financial inclusion and consumer education also remains strong.

For example, platforms like Account Aggregator and Retail-Direct aim to bring more Indians into the formal financial system. These tools, combined with AI-driven outreach, could significantly broaden banking access across the country.
