The Reserve Bank of India conducted an overnight Variable Rate Repo (VRR) auction on July 7, 2026. The RBI VRR auction drew significantly lower bids than the notified amount, signalling subdued demand for short-term liquidity among banks.
Key Details of the RBI VRR Auction
The RBI offered ₹50,000 crore through a 1-day tenor auction. However, banks submitted bids worth only ₹1,135 crore in total. As a result, the RBI allotted the entire ₹1,135 crore that was bid. No partial allotment was required.
The cut-off rate stood at 5.26%. Additionally, the weighted average rate also settled at 5.26%, indicating uniform pricing across all accepted bids. This suggests that all participating banks bid at the same rate.
What This Means for the Banking System
The low bid-to-notified ratio points to comfortable liquidity conditions in the banking system. Therefore, banks did not feel the need to borrow heavily from the RBI’s overnight window. Meanwhile, the 5.26% rate remains consistent with recent short-term money market levels.
For example, when system liquidity is ample, banks typically borrow far less than what the central bank offers. This auction result reflects exactly that scenario. Additionally, it suggests that short-term borrowing costs remain stable for now.
However, market participants will closely watch upcoming auctions for any shift in liquidity demand. A sudden rise in bids could signal tightening conditions. For now, the banking system appears well-funded.
About Variable Rate Repo Auctions
The RBI uses Variable Rate Repo auctions as a key liquidity management tool. Through these auctions, banks can borrow funds from the central bank at market-determined rates. As a result, the VRR mechanism helps the RBI manage day-to-day liquidity in the financial system.
Unlike the fixed-rate repo, the VRR rate varies based on competitive bidding. Therefore, the weighted average rate reflects the true short-term cost of funds. This makes VRR auctions a reliable indicator of prevailing market liquidity conditions.
